There is a rare, vital kind of magic that happens when an artist returns from the wilderness. For over two decades, UK singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Patrick Wolf has carved out a singular space in modern music—a space hanging beautifully between ancient folklore and modern electronica, the mythic and the deeply raw.
Tomorrow night, Tuesday, June 23, Austin has a rare opportunity to step into that world when Wolf takes the stage at the Long Center for the Performing Arts.
A Renaissance Born from the Edge
Patrick Wolf’s story is one of spectacular ascent, a quiet retreat, and a triumphant, deeply human rebirth. Emerging as a prodigy at just 19 with his 2003 debut Lycanthropy, Wolf paired an operatic, multi-octave baritone voice with a dizzying mastery of instruments, from the viola to modular synths. He collaborated with legends like Florence Welch and Marianne Faithfull, and toured alongside Patti Smith’s band.
Yet, following a sudden retreat from the industry and a decade of intense personal trial, Wolf found his way back to his vocation. This striking journey of resilience is so profound it is the subject of an upcoming feature film biopic, Wolf, executive produced and narrated by Tilda Swinton.
His return was solidified with last year’s critically acclaimed masterpiece, Crying The Neck—his first album in 13 years. A sweeping, art-pop song cycle steeped in English and Celtic folklore, Spin hailed it as “the melancholy statement we need to meet these difficult times.”
Two New Anthems for a Bewildering World
Driving himself across North America on a grueling ten-week tour last year, Wolf discovered something remarkable: his original fanbase hadn’t just waited for him; a completely new generation of listeners had grown in his absence. Moved by fans telling him his music made them feel less alone, Wolf retreated to his home studio in Ramsgate, UK, over the winter to write, produce, and record two standalone tracks that serve as the beating heart of his current tour.
- “The Beast” – Released in late May, this is a thunderous, defiant harpsichord banger. It stands as an empowering anthem for the ostracized, the pariahs, and those pushed to the margins of society.
- “The Laughing Dove” – Released in early June, this track acts as a gentle hymn of solace, utilizing a self-invented instrument called the Kantalyre to invite listeners to step away from the world’s suffering and nurture their internal peace.
“The Tour Of The Beast is a tour for the outcast, the pariah, the one with the scarlet letter they are only just learning to wear with pride.” — Patrick Wolf
What to Expect Tomorrow Night
Tomorrow’s performance at the Long Center promises to be an extraordinarily intimate, solo experience. Do not expect a standard singer-songwriter set; a Patrick Wolf show is an astounding sonic collision.
Attendees will witness Wolf live-looping electronics and driving rhythms while weaving through an array of instruments: the Appalachian mountain dulcimer, 5-string viola, upright piano, lyre, and folk guitars. To make the storytelling even more immersive, Wolf will be wearing a custom-designed wardrobe he created himself, based entirely on the mythic characters living inside his songs.
