There is something quietly special about seeing avant-garde art-pop stripped down to its essentials in a room built for intimacy. This past Tuesday, June 23rd, the Rollins Studio Theatre at the Long Center delivered exactly the kind of night that reminds you why Austin still earns its reputation as a destination for serious music lovers and the artists who seek them out.

Julia Nunes: Simple Songs, Complex Soul:

Opening the evening was Julia Nunes, and she was a joy. She is a master of using her voice to in a way that feels melodic and effortless, though you quickly get a sense of the craft underneath it. Her songs typically clock in around two to three minutes, but she packs into that space a remarkable amount of personal sincerity, touching on her relationships with God, ex-lovers, and family with equal parts heartbreak and wit. What seems simple and uncomplicated on the surface quickly reveals an emotional depth that is funny and devastating in the same breath.

The highlights for me were “Dear God” and “Dear Ben” which she sang back to back. “Dear Ben” is a tongue-in-cheek breakup anthem that had the politely seated audience enthusiastically singing along to the chorus of “Don’t try to fuck me again.” Nunes is a master at disarming you and bringing you into her world, and you want to cheer for her and sing along with her.
Patrick Wolf: A Wall of Sound And Feeling:

When Patrick Wolf took the stage, the atmosphere shifted into something mythic yet deeply unpretentious. For an artist with such a legendary, shape-shifting reputation, Wolf appeared strikingly unassuming. Surrounded by dozens of instruments, he spent his set treating the stage like an active laboratory, meticulously shifting between the piano, guitar, and a 5-string viola to build mesmerizing, live-looped soundscapes.

[ PATRICK WOLF LIVE the Rollins Studio Theatre at the Long Center for the Performing Arts Tuesday June 23, 2026 in Austin, Texas]
When Patrick Wolf took the stage, the atmosphere shifted into something hard to pin down. Wolf is a shape-shifter by reputation, and he arrived unassumingly, surrounded by multiple instruments, moving methodically between piano, guitar, and a five-string viola to build live-looped soundscapes in real time. He creates his music like a priest assembling a sacred altar, casting spells made of sound and emotion in front of you. The songs blur together at the edges, and that’s the point. Each one is distinctly focused on creating a feeling, telling a story in purely aural form rather than leaning on lyrical hooks to do the heavy lifting. You don’t so much listen to him as get lost inside the sound. The live performance breathes a wild, unpredictable energy into his catalog that you will never get from Spotify.
For his first major US tour in over a decade, this felt like exactly the right place and time to see him. Austin lived up to its promise Tuesday night, and the Rollins provided an intimate, unhurried venue designed exactly for this experience. It was the perfect place to get gloriously lost in it.
